Laser stretch-mark reduction

at Dr Deborah McManners’ clinic

Stretch marks affect many people and can appear at any time when skin is stretched too far or too fast – such as during puberty, pregnancy or weight change. The marks start off red in colour in lines which are spaced over the skin’s surface. Over time, they mature and turn to a silvery shade. It is best to treat them when they are relatively new, in order to effectively reduce them. Dr McManners uses highly-advanced fractional laser technology to diminish stretch marks and leave skin smoother and clearer.*

Laser scar treatment uses short pulses of micro-fine laser light to reach below the epidermis into the skin’s sub layers. Using laser technology, miniscule dot or pixel-like formations of skin are selected to effectively treat the skin’s support structures. Older, damaged tissue is broken down by the body’s natural healing process and rebuilt with fresh, new collagen and elastin. It’s this new collagen that can smooth the stretch-mark’s texture while improving its colour.*

The therapy can be used on any part of the body including the stomach, hips, arms, breasts and legs. Surrounding skin is not harmed in any way and the treatment is suitable for many skin types (including very light and very dark skin). Non-invasive, simple and straightforward – laser stretch-mark reduction’s efficacy complements Dr McManners’ expertise*

Your questions answered

  1. What does laser stretch-mark reduction involve?

This innovative technology delivers a large number of micro-dots of laser energy per square centimetre of skin treated. It does not wound or remove any skin (non-ablative). The energy creates narrow, deep columns of tissue coagulation into the skin’s deeper layers. This triggers the body’s natural healing response which boosts production of collagen and elastin helping to improve the texture and colour of stretch marks.* The laser is applied via a hand-held device.

  2. Why do you use the fractional laser?

Dr McManners has selected this superior technology as it delivers greater energy per microbeam with more penetration (up to 1mm) than peer/competing devices. This stimulates quick healing within the surrounding deep tissue for more effective skin correction and long-term collagen remodelling.*

  3. How many treatments will I need?

This does depend on the number of stretch marks, but most patients have from 3 to 8 treatments for the best potential results at 4 to 6 week internals* New stretch marks are easier to manage, but mature stretch marks are also treatable. Older stretch marks usually require a more intense procedure, and may take more sessions to achieve results.

  4. Does the treatment hurt?

The laser technology has an advanced cooling feature which also reduces any discomfort. Most patients experience a mild prickling and/or warm sensation.*

  5. What should I expect after treatment?

Skin may appear flushed and pink but most of our patients are able to carry on with normal life immediately after the treatment.* It’s important to use a sunscreen of SPF30 to 60.

  6. Are there any side effects?

Side effects are rare but can include mild swelling, redness and skin flaking. There is a low risk of itching, redness and blistering as well as lightening or darkening of the skin.*

“By the end of my second pregnancy, my entire stomach area was covered in stretch marks. In the end, I just got tired of living with it and made an appointment with Dr McManners. The improvement has been great and I even wore a bikini this summer.”
