Medical microdermabrasion and chemical peels

at Dr Deborah McManners’ clinic

Medical microdermabrasion and chemical peels work as stand-alone treatments as well as complementing each other when used together to form a tailored treatment plan. Both treatments exfoliate dead skin cells away to reveal the younger skin cells beneath. Skin looks and feels brighter and smoother and is able to absorb nutrients and active ingredients far better.*

Dr McManners uses medical microdermabrasion system for its advanced skin-resurfacing technology. The system uses a highly-controlled flow of fine medical-grade crystals to remove the outermost layer of skin (stratum corneum). This restores radiance and targets many skin concerns including hyperpigmentation, superficial age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, blackheads and whiteheads as well as acne-prone, oily and sun-damaged skin. The treatment’s abrasion and vacuum stimulates the underlying epidermis which promotes the production of new collagen to fight the signs of ageing.*

Microdermabrasion can be supported with chemical peels – advanced and innovative peels that help to treat ageing skin, acne prone, congested skin and unwanted pigmentation. The depth of each peel is determined by Dr McManners depending on skin health and concerns. There are 3 core peels as detailed below all formulated to deliver visible results:

  • Anti-ageing peels which stimulate cells deep within the skin to promote collagen and elastin production for firmer, younger-looking skin*
  • Acne peels help to reduce blocked pores and redness while bringing acne under control to reduce the risk of future scarring*
  • Pigmentation-control peels penetrate pigment cells to reduce discolouration for a more even skin tone*

Your questions answered

  1. How does medical microdermabrasion work?

The treatment removes the outermost layer of skin (known as the stratum corneum) in an even and controlled way. This process encourages new cell growth and reveals the younger, brighter skin beneath.

The procedure is carried out using a hand-held device. The device has an abrasive and vacuum effect which stimulates the underlying epidermis promoting collagen production.*

  2. How many treatments will I need?

This depends on the skin concerns you have and the results you’d like to achieve. We’ll advise on this in full during your consultation.

  3. Is medical microdermabrasion safe?

This is a tried and trusted treatment for improving skin tone and texture.

  4. What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a non-invasive treatment to rejuvenate skin and restore radiance while targeting a number of skin concerns. Chemical peels are specially formulated to help treat acne, ageing skin and unwanted pigmentation.

Stable acids including salicylic, lactic and l-ascorbic deeply exfoliate to remove the top layer of dead skin cells. This stimulates the renewal of healthy new skin cells in turn improving collagen production. The new cells are able to absorb active ingredients and nutrients more efficiently to help improve skin appearance.*

  5. Will I need more than one treatment?

Most of our patients benefit from optimum results with a course of peels. We usually recommend 3 to 6 peels around 2 to 4 weeks apart. Monthly or bi-monthly top-up treatments will help to maintain results.*

  6. How do I care for my skin after a peel?

It’s important to use a sunscreen with SPF25 to 50 during the course of your treatment and for a few weeks afterwards. A treatment plan using skincare products to use at home will be advised to enhance and optimise the results.*

“Age spots appeared around my cheeks and forehead so I decided to look into treatment options. Microdermabrasion and a course of chemical peels really helped to fade and lighten the pigmentation and Dr McManners and her team went through all the options clearly. It made making a decision so much easier.”
